Compulsory electives

Compulsory electives are defined by article 33 of Gimnazije Act (Ur. l. RS, št. 1/2007). Compulsory electives are activities that are offered by the school and the students can choose them freely. They are usually carried out in a condensed way.

 

Compulsory electives consist of 300 hours that are distributed as follows:

  • Year 1 – 90 hours
  • Year 2 – 90 hours
  • Year 3 – 90 hours
  • Year 4 – 30 hours.

 

Compulsory electives are divided into:

 

1. Compulsory electives for all students.

These are:

Civic culture (15 hours), library and information science (15 hours), cultural and artistic subject matters (15 hours), sports days (35 hours), health education (15 hours) and family, peace and non-violence education (15 hours). They comprise of 110 hours that are carried out throughout the four years of schooling.

 

2. Compulsory electives regulated by the programme.

 

The following compulsory electives are obligatory for students enrolled in grammar school programme:

  • Cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of fine arts (18 hours),
  • Cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of music (18 hours).

These compulsory electives are carried out in Year 1 (fine arts education and music).

 

The following compulsory electives are obligatory for students enrolled in classical grammar school programme:

  • Cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of fine arts (35 hours),
  • Cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of music (35 hours).

These compulsory electives are carried out in Year 2 (fine arts education and music).

 

3. Compulsory electives chosen freely by the students.

 

All hours for compulsory electives in Year 2 are dedicated to a school excursion and in Year 3 to an international exchange.

 

4. The school is obliged to offer the following compulsory electives, providing there are enough students interested in taking them:

  • logic,
  • cross curricular integration with an excursion or a camp,
  • keyboard literacy,
  • volunteer social work,
  • first aid,
  • sports camps and nature studies,
  • learning to learn (the school organises this course for all students),
  • religion and ethics,
  • Archaeology (only for the students of classical grammar school programme).

YEAR 1

- family, peace and non-violence education

YEAR 2

The majority of compulsory electives in Year 2 are dedicated to a school excursion that entails the following:
- cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of fine arts
- cultural and artistic subject matter from the field of music

Other compulsory electives:
- health education
- civic culture
- learning to learn
- library and information science
- two sports days
- poljanfest

YEAR 3

The majority of compulsory electives in Year 3 are dedicated to an international exchange that entails the following:
- family, peace and non-violence education
- cultural and artistic subject matter
- library and information science

Other compulsory electives:
- health education
- a sports day
- poljanfest
- learning to learn

YEAR 4

- two sports days
- poljanfest
- a dance class and the matura dance.

Grammar school programme

YEAR 1
